ISQ opens for NYC-based violist Kallie Ciechomski, playing music by Los Angeles composers Morgan Gerstmar, Melinda Rice, and Cassia Streb, as well as Meredith Monk.
The second set of the night is part of Kallie's two week West Coast solo tour, showcasing contemporary viola works by composers who are women. Her program features music by Joan Tower, Augusta Read Thomas, and Pauline Oliveros, plus an adaption of a 1,000 year old piece by Hildegard von Bingen. The centerpiece of this concert is a world premiere by Mariel Berger, which is a feminist counterpoint to the male-dominated classical world, and unfolds itself to depict a female orgasm.
